Canada’s National Firearms Association applauds the decision to remove Chief Superintendent Marty Cheliak from the position of Director General of the Canadian Firearms Program.
Speaking from Prince George, Sheldon Clare the President of Canada’s NFA said: “The chief Superintendent was a classic example of a bureaucrat trying to drive policy and law rather than just implementing it on behalf of the government and the country. It is not appropriate for the police to be lobbying on matters which may appear to be beneficial to their own budgets. Cheliak’s transfer is clearly a message that Canada is a country driven by the people rather than its police force.”
Clare continued, “There is clearly government intent to make sweeping changes to Canada’s unworkable, expensive and unnecessary firearms legislation. Candace Hoeppner’s private member’s bill C-391 to end registration of long-arms, while not a government bill, would certainly be a good first step to reforming Canadian firearms legislation. The police should not be taking political stands on legislative matters as this brings into disrepute any claims of neutrality.”
